From Opthalmology Management - EHR in the Cloud: Is It Right for Your Practice?
BY JERRY HELZNER, SENIOR EDITOR
Think back about three or four years when ophthalmology practices, under increasing pressure from the federal government, first faced incentives to convert from paper medical records to an electronic health records (EHR) system. At that time, making such a conversion required major up-front investment, on-site servers, local IT support and practice responsibilities ranging from security, to maintenance to HIPAA compliance. No wonder so many practices, especially smaller ones, were approaching this scenario with dread. more

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 On February 17, 2009 President Obama signed into law The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, providing us with the opportunity to transform healthcare in the United States. The law provides $19 billion in health information technology funding to ensure widespread adoption and use of interoperable healthcare IT systems. The incentives can total as much as $44,000 per physician over a 5 year period.
To qualify, the physician must demonstrate “meaningful use” of an EHR which includes" 1. Use of e-Prescribing, 2. Electronically exchange information, 3. Submit clinical quality measures PQRI. With our Internet based infrastructure being centralized, our ability to respond and update with new criteria is unparalleled when compared to legacy client/server based solutions allowing physicians to meet the requirements in a timely fashion. The includes the adoption of a government certified ehr system.
We are now certified as a complete EHR system as of February 2010 and customers who wish to qualify will have ample time to demonstrate meaningful use during the 3 months required use in 2012 in order to begin to qualify for maximum incentive payments over the life of the program.
Customers may also wish to claim the current e-prescribing bonus still in effect for 2012 and begin meaningful use in 2013.

Due to the overwhelming interest, we were not able to show everyone the system in the time allotted. You can however contact us and we would be delighted to set up a web demonstration that fits your schedule.
Over 2 years ago, we began to offer our solution based on Cloud technology. Although many said it couldn't be done, 2 years later we have shown that you can have a system with a lower overall IT footprint and cost. Follow this link for the article, Dan Montzka: Changing Ophthalmic EMR.
